There are many reasons why people think of Istria as the most beautiful place in the world. It is located near two historic cities Venice and Vienna, which also had a great impact on its history and heritage. Already in times of big and powerful Republic of Venice the vines from the slopes of Venice were much more appreciated than those from the nearby plain terrains. Our slopes were already then recognised as particular among others thanks to the different soil.
Green undulating hills in early spring, glistening piles of salt … Friendly and open people, small beautiful towns and villages on the coast. If we judge people according to what they produce and by their actions, we can recognize and value Istria for its fruits of its soil.
The story about our heritage goes back in the time when Turks were attacking the territory and even back to the time of the Roman Empire. Between World Wars Istria was occupied by the Germans, our vineyards have later become a part of multicultural Yugoslavia. When Slovenia declared its independence, our wines became Slovenian. Origins of our wines are the mix of different countries and cultures, but at the end they originate in the European Union. Throughout rich history our tradition remained the same – Istrian tradition, which gives its soul and energy to our wines.
The position of our vineyards has a long history of being a part of six countries in 200 years. The countries we were part of had various stages of development throughout history and helped us stand firmly on our ground through all the political and social changes. Istria as a wine-growing region never changed. It has always remained the same and kept its spirit. The leaders were changing but Istrians remained at the same place and proudly entertained their leaders with wine. Istrian wine was appreciated. In the time of the Venetians Istrians paid their taxes in the form of wine. The Habsburgs perceived the Istrian refosco as a medicine, they were selling it in farmacies in Vienna.
